Up and Running with AutoCAD 2012, Second Edition: 2D and 3D Drawing and Modeling by Elliot Gindis
Up and Running with AutoCAD 2012, Second Edition: 2D and 3D Drawing and Modeling
by: Elliot Gindis

Gindis introduces AutoCAD with step by step instructions, stripping away complexities to begin working in AutoCAD immediately. All concepts are explained first in theory, and then shown in practice, helping the reader understand what it is they are doing and why, before they do it. Divided into three parts, the book covers beginning through advanced AutoCAD, including 3D features. Also included is an extensive Appendix for each part, detailing additional useful CAD-related information not often found in other text books The book contains supporting graphics (screen shots) and a summary with a self-test section at the end of each chapter. Also included are drawing examples and exercises, and two running "projects" that the student works on as he/she progresses through the chapters .
1) Strips away complexities, both real and perceived and reduces AutoCAD to easy-to-understand basic concepts.
2) Teaches only what is essential to operating AutoCAD first, thereby immediately building student confidence.
3) All basic commands are documented step-by-step, meaning that what the student needs to type in and how AutoCAD responds is all spelled out in discrete and clear steps with screen shots added as needed.
4) Using the author's extensive multi-industry knowledge of what is important and widely used in practice versus what is not, the material is presented by immediately immersing the student in practical, critically essential knowledge, with no padding of text or filler material.
5) All concepts are explained first in theory, and only then is AutoCAD introduced and the actual "button pushing" discussed. This is one of the key concepts in having students understand exactly what it is they are doing and why, before they do it.

Design: The History, Theory and Practice of Product Design by Bernhard E. Burdek

Design: The History, Theory and Practice of Product Design
by: Bernhard E. Burdek

Design today is a global instrument. Bernhard Bürdek traces the progress of design from its beginnings in the late 19th century, through the most significant movements of the 20th century up to those recent developments in biological engineering which will shape the 21st century. Design is now a discipline in its own right and its expertise can be incorporated within interdisciplinary processes. The most important fundamental principles of design theory and methodology are presented, looking in particular at the communicative function of products and highlighting aspects such as corporate and service design, design management, strategic design, interface/interaction design and human design.

Bernhard E. Bürdek is Professor at the Academy of Art and Design (hfg) in Offenbach am Main (Germany) and author of numerous publications. He heads the design office Vision & Gestalt.

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective)

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective)by Publishing's Design Collective

Little Birds: 26 Handmade Projects to Sew, Stitch, Quilt & Love (Design Collective)
by: C&T Publishing's Design Collective

This adorable book is all about the birds! From budgies to owls to peacocks, these projects will pique your curiousity and make your heart sing! Many talented designers bring you soft sculptures, quilts, ornaments, and more.

This book features 26 projects involving birds from soft toy birds to embroidery involving birds in the design there is something for everyone. It incorporates techniques such as quilting and embroidery but the projects are suitable for beginners. Some of the birds are decorative and others, like the Bird on Branch Make Up bag or little birds quilt, are functional. Each project has the instructions broken down into a few different steps, from getting the necessary equipment together before you start to cutting the fabric and constructing the bird itself. What I love is that at the start of each project there is a little biography of the contributor along with links to their website/blog/shop so that you can find out more about them, or buy one of the birds if you don't want to make it yourself. At the back of the book you will find pattern pieces and a guide to the embroidery stitches used. (The Sewing Directory, july 12, 2010 )

Quilters' favorite C&T Publishing has a new imprint, stash Books, which expands its titles to include general crafting topics. The Design Collectives book series showcases groups of new fabric-craft designers and their work, and this little volume is one of their cutest so far. With 26 avian-themed projects to make from your stash, it's a wonderful resource for gift-making. (Quick Quilts, 9/1/10 )

The first in a series of titles called Design Collective, this book features designs by a group of clever and talented fabric artists from Canada and around the world who all share a love of cute little birds. Included are patterns for 26 hand-made projects to sew, stitch and quilt. (Quilter's Connection Magazine, June 1, 2010 )

The Computer Graphics Manual, Volume 1 & 2
by: David Salomon

The power of computer-generated images is everywhere. Computer graphics has pervaded our lives to such an extent that sometimes we don t even realize that an image we are watching is artificial.Comprehensive, accessible and engaging, The Computer Graphics Manual presents a broad overview of computer graphics, its history and its pioneers, and the hardware tools it employs. Covering a substantial number of concepts and algorithms, this invaluable text/reference describes the techniques, approaches, and algorithms at the core of this field. Emphasis is placed on practical design and implementation, highlighting how graphics software works, and explaining how current computer graphics can generate and display realistic-looking curves, surfaces, and objects. The use of mathematics is mostly non-rigorous, with the necessary mathematical background introduced in the Appendixes.Topics and features: Includes numerous figures, examples and exercises (with solutions) throughout the textCovers the history, basic concepts, and techniques used in computer graphicsDiscusses the key two- and three-dimensional transformations, in addition to the main types of projectionsPresents an extensive selection of methods, algorithms, and techniques employed to construct curves and surfacesExamines advanced techniques in computer graphics, with chapters on the nature and properties of light and color, graphics standards and graphics file formats, and fractalsExplores the principles of image compression, focusing on orthogonal and subband (wavelet) transformsDescribes the important input/output graphics devices, and explains their operationsThis practical and expansive reference is an essential resource for professionals in computer science, engineering, and other disciplines involved in the generation and processing of digital images. The manual is also ideal for use as a textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on computer graphics.David Salomon is a professor emeritus of Computer Science at California State University, Northridge. He has authored numerous articles and Springer books, including Elements of Computer Security, Handbook of Data Compression, A Concise Introduction to Data Compression, Variable-length Codes for Data Compression, Transformations and Projections in Computer Graphics, Curves and Surfaces for Computer Graphics, Coding for Data and Computer Communications, Data Privacy and Security, and A Guide to Data Compression Methods.

Light & Skin Interactions - Simulations for Computer Graphics Applications - Gladimir V. G. Baranoski

Light & Skin Interactions: Simulations for Computer Graphics Applications by Gladimir V. G. Baranoski

Light & Skin Interactions: Simulations for Computer Graphics Applications
by: Gladimir V. G. Baranoski, Aravind Krishnaswamy

Light and Skin Interactions immerses you in one of the most fascinating application areas of computer graphics: appearance simulation. The book first illuminates the fundamental biophysical processes that affect skin appearance, and reviews seminal related works aimed at applications in life and health sciences. It then examines four exemplary modeling approaches as well as definitive algorithms that can be used to generate realistic images depicting skin appearance. An accompanying companion site also includes complete code and data sources for the BioSpec model, which is considered to be the most comprehensive first principles model in the field. Despite its wide scope of simulation approaches, the book's content is presented in a concise manner, focusing on relevant practical aspects. What's more, these approaches can be successfully applied to a wide range of additional materials, such as eye tissue, hair, and water. Allows you to understand and predict the qualitative and quantitative behavior of complex natural systems. A general background on tissue optics clarifies several confusing conceptual issues, saving you valuable time in the early stages of research Includes complete code and data sources for the BioSpec model
